WWI Era Chevalier Binoculars with Chasseur Alpins Compass.
Around the edge of each ocular is "Chevalier". The Chevalier Family were French opticians known for making lenses, according to the Science Museum Group. Between the two oculars is a stick compass which is referred to as a Chasseur Alpins compass. The Chasseur Alpins were a specialized mountain corps. The lenses still help magnify images when adjusted and the compass still moves accordingly.
